Chukha

The district is the key producer of Bhutan’s hydroelectric power, a bulk of which is exported to India. Hydroelectricity also powers Chukha’s flagship industries, which include carbide, chemicals, ferro-silicon, steel, cement, polymer, polythene, fruit products and beverages. Some of the densest sub-tropical forests in Bhutan are found in Chukha.

Chukha was once the seat of the Chukha Penlop (regional governors), one of the wealthiest patrons of the Zhabdrung, the founder of Bhutan’s nation-state. Pagsamkha in Chhukha was considered one of the four gateways to Bhutan and many British political officers entered the country via the Buxa Duar and then through Chukha to Punakha, Bhutan’s ancient capital.
