Forming a part of the congregate of six eastern districts, Mongar is endowed with stark cliffs and gorges, and dense conifer forests. The region is well known for the production of Ara (local alcohol) containers or Jandhom, wooden bowls and cups or Daapa, masks, and wood-based musical instruments like Jaling and Dung.
Four ethnic groups inhabit Mongar: Tshangla, Kurtoep, Chhalip, and Gongduep. The staple food is Kharang (ground maize; see picture below). Today, parts of Mongar are becoming increasingly renowned as the “birding capital” of the world.
