Paro

Considered the Rice Bowl of Bhutan with its annual bounties of paddy (staple red rice), the wide and fertile Paro valley has both an ancient and a modern face. It is home to some of the most revered temples in the kingdom and also boasts Bhutan’s only international airport.

When the Parops celebrate their new year on the 29th day of the 10th month of the Bhutanese lunar calendar, families come together to share the season’s bounty, and conduct special ceremonies and prayers to ward off evil and bring good fortune in the coming year.
Tourism has brought a boom to Paro. It has brought about the revival of old crafts such as pottery, scroll painting, boot-making, and other “living arts” that were previously threatened by modernization.
