Located in the south-central region of Bhutan, Zhemgang traditionally has been called Khengrig Namsum, or the “Sacred Realm of Three Hills”. The district is blessed with no less than 22 endangered animal species, and is a gateway to the Manas National Park, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its wealth of biodiversity.
The people of Zhemgang are skilled craftspeople. The region’s most famous and nationally recognized products include Bangchung (matted bamboo plates), Palang (alcohol containers), Balak (hats), Paris (mats), Zem (boxes), Aumbuli (small containers) and Bangkhap (bamboo winnowers). They live in traditional homes built from stone, mud and wood while in the more rural and remote interiors one also finds simpler dwellings fashioned from bamboo thatch and plantain leaves.
