Jambay Lhakhang

Every November, the Jambay Lhakhang Drup presents a unique spectacle in Bhutanese festival culture. At a precise moment around midnight, masked men, wearing nothing but a minimal silk brocade over their upper bodies, perform an ancient dance believed to sanctify the ground and ward off evil spirits. This ritual dance, rooted in nearly a millennium of tradition, is exclusive to the Jambay Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, established in 640 AD. Highlights of the festival include a fire ceremony and phallus blessings. However, visitors are advised that photography of the naked dancers is strictly prohibited to preserve the sanctity of the event. This festival offers a profound glimpse into the spiritual essence of Bumthang Valley, celebrated as the spiritual heartland of Bhutan.
