Laya - Gasa Trek

The Laya Gasa trek is an exhilarating high-altitude adventure that takes you through some of Bhutan's most breathtaking and remote landscapes. This challenging 12-day trek winds through diverse terrains, from lush forests to alpine meadows, crossing several mountain passes. Trekkers are rewarded with stunning views of snow-capped peaks, including the majestic Mount Jumolhari, and encounters with unique flora and fauna. The trek also offers a rare opportunity to experience the rich culture of the Layap people in the isolated village of Laya. This trek requires good physical fitness and proper acclimatization, with altitudes ranging from 2,870m to 4,140m. The journey culminates in the relaxing hot springs of Gasa before concluding in the picturesque Punakha Valley.

Day 1 — Thimphu to Punakha (drive)

  • Drive via Dochu La to Punakha (3–4 hrs). Visit Punakha Dzong. Overnight hotel; acclimatize.
Day 2 — Punakha to Gasa (drive)
  • Drive to Gasa through scenic valleys (4–6 hrs). Visit hot springs if time. Overnight guesthouse/lodge.
Day 3 — Gasa to Lhedi (trek start)
  • Trek 4–6 hrs through rhododendron and pine forest, gentle ascents. Camp/guesthouse at Lhedi (approx. 2,400–2,800 m).
Day 4 — Lhedi to Laya
  • Longer day 6–8 hrs, gradual climb into alpine zone, enter Layap cultural area. Overnight in Laya village (homestay/guesthouse; ~3,850 m).
Day 5 — Laya (rest & cultural day)
  • Rest, short local walks, visit Layap homes and village monastery, acclimatize. Overnight in Laya.
Day 6 — Laya to Throjong / High Camp
  • Trek 5–7 hrs ascending to high pastures and yak grazing lands; panoramic Himalayan views. Camp/guesthouse (~4,200–4,400 m).
Day 7 — High Camp to Kichu La area (high pass approach)
  • Cross or approach high passes (route/altitude vary); 5–7 hrs with rocky/high-altitude sections. Overnight in high camp or yak pasture area.
Day 8 — Traverse toward Larjey / Descent to Satsam
  • Continue high-altitude trekking with long descent sections (6–8 hrs). Camp/guesthouse in Satsam/Larjey area.
Day 9 — Satsam to Gasa (descent)
  • Descend through forests and villages back toward Gasa region (5–7 hrs). Overnight in Gasa; soak in hot springs.
Day 10 — Gasa to Punakha (drive)
  • Drive from Gasa to Punakha (4–6 hrs). Relax, visit local sites. Overnight in Punakha.
Day 11 — Punakha to Thimphu (drive)
  • Drive back to Thimphu via Dochu La (3–4 hrs). Optional city sights in afternoon. Overnight in Thimphu.
Day 12 — Thimphu (depart or extra day)
  • Buffer day for travel/tours in Thimphu or departure.
